Image & Document Tools

Nine tools for moving between pictures and documents in both directions — grouped by what you are trying to do. Everything runs in your browser, free, with no sign-up.

Turn an image into a document

Get the content of a picture into something you can edit, present or send.

Get images out of a document

Render pages and slides as pictures you can post or embed.

Prepare an image first

A few minutes here saves a lot of correcting afterwards.

Which tool do you need?

An image is pixels. A document is structure. Almost every problem on this page comes from moving between the two, and most of them are avoidable if you know what to check first.

You need the text out of a photo

Image to Document uses OCR to recognise characters. Accuracy depends far more on your photo than on the software: even lighting, camera held straight down rather than tilted, page pressed flat, tapped to focus. Five minutes of care here saves an hour of correcting afterwards.

PNG or JPG?

JPEG was built for photographs and handles hard edges badly — and text is nothing but hard edges. Use PNG for screenshots, diagrams, charts and anything with type; JPG for photos, where the quality loss is invisible and the file is a fraction of the size. Converting a JPG to PNG afterwards does not restore lost detail; it preserves the damage in a bigger file.

Your iPhone photos will not open

Modern iPhones save as HEIC, which many websites, Windows apps and older software cannot read. HEIC to JPG converts them to a format everything understands. Worth doing before uploading anywhere that rejects the file.

Your photo arrived sideways

Phone cameras record orientation as metadata rather than in the pixels, and not every piece of software downstream reads that tag. Open the image on a computer, rotate it, save it — the rotation is then baked in and travels correctly everywhere. Check the first photo before converting twenty.

Bigger is not sharper past a point

A full-screen slide on a 1080p projector is 1920 pixels wide; 2560 covers large displays comfortably. Beyond that you add file size and nothing visible. The reverse matters more — upscaling cannot invent detail, so always start from the largest version you have rather than one already resized for email.

Your deck or PDF is enormous

Full-resolution photos are almost always the reason. Compress or resize images to around 2000 pixels on the long edge before placing them, and the finished file stays manageable from the start.

Why ButDoc

Pixels in, structure out

An image contains no words, no columns and no reading order — only coloured dots arranged so that a human eye reads them as text. Getting from one to the other means recognising letter shapes and guessing at layout, which works remarkably well on a clean page and poorly on a shadowed, angled photograph of a curved book.

Going the other way is simpler but has its own trade: once a slide or a page becomes an image, nobody can select a word, search engines read nothing, and screen readers find nothing at all. Each tool page sets out what you gain and what you give up, because both directions cost something.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can OCR read handwriting?
Not reliably. OCR is trained on printed type; handwriting recognition is a separate technology that still struggles with cursive and individual variation. Neat block capitals sometimes work partially, but expect to retype most handwritten material.
Why are numbers wrong in my extracted text?
Certain characters are genuinely ambiguous at small sizes — 0 and O, 1 and l, 5 and S, 8 and B. A misread letter in prose is obvious; a misread digit still looks like a valid figure. Never treat OCR output of financial, medical or legal data as verified.
Will the layout of my page be preserved?
No. OCR recovers words, not design. Columns, exact spacing and table grids are not reconstructed, because an image holds no usable information about them. Multi-column pages read best if you crop each column and convert them separately.
Which image formats can I upload?
JPG and PNG work everywhere on the site. For a HEIC file from an iPhone, a WebP saved from a browser, or a TIFF from a scanner, convert it to PNG or JPG first.
Should I add alt text when posting an image online?
Yes. A slide or page posted as an image is invisible to screen readers and to search engines. Alt text takes fifteen seconds, works on every platform and CMS, and is the only thing that makes the content readable by either.
What happens to the files I upload?
They travel over an encrypted connection, are processed automatically without human review, and are permanently deleted from our servers within 60 minutes. There is no backup. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
