Excel & Spreadsheet Tools

Six tools for getting data into a spreadsheet and sharing it safely once it is there. Everything runs in your browser, free, with no sign-up.

Get data into a spreadsheet

Pull tables out of another format and into cells you can calculate with.

Share a spreadsheet

Send figures people can read but not alter.

Which tool do you need?

Spreadsheets are the one format where a conversion mistake can go unnoticed and still be wrong. These are the choices worth getting right.

Sharing figures without sharing your workings

An .xlsx is a compressed archive: hidden rows, other worksheets, cell comments and every formula travel inside it, and hiding a column protects nothing — the recipient right-clicks and unhides. Excel to JPG sends only the pixels of what was visible. For something readable but fixed, Excel to PDF.

Your PDF table came out empty

Try selecting a number in the original. If nothing highlights, it is a scan and PDF to Excel has no text to extract — run OCR first. Be careful with the result: OCR confuses 0 with O and 5 with S, and a misread digit still looks like a valid figure.

SUM is ignoring your numbers

They imported as text that looks numeric — usually because of currency symbols, thousands separators, or negatives written in parentheses. Select the column and check Excel's status bar: if it shows only Count and no Sum, use Data → Text to Columns → Finish to convert the whole column at once.

Set a print area before converting

A worksheet has no natural edge, so a converter uses the used range — every cell that has ever held content or formatting. Press Ctrl + End to see where Excel thinks your sheet ends. If it lands somewhere absurd, set a print area first, or you will get a tiny table floating in a sea of white.

Cells showing ######## instead of numbers

The column is narrower than the value it holds. Excel shows hashes rather than a truncated figure, and any conversion captures exactly that. Select all with Ctrl+A and use Home → Format → AutoFit Column Width before converting.

Moving data into another system

Excel to CSV strips everything except the values — no formatting, no formulas, no multiple sheets. That is exactly what most databases, accounting packages and import tools expect. Excel to HTML suits putting a table on a web page instead.

Why ButDoc

A spreadsheet knows it is a grid. Most formats do not.

In a spreadsheet every value belongs to a cell with a row and a column, and that relationship is stored explicitly. A PDF records only that a piece of text sits at particular coordinates — the neat table you see is an illusion created by careful positioning. Converting between them means reconstructing the grid by inference, which is why results vary by document rather than by tool.

Going the other way is easier but has its own trap: a spreadsheet is an infinite grid and a page has edges, so something has to decide where the sheet ends. Each tool page explains what to prepare beforehand and what to check afterwards.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Excel installed?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and .xlsx files open in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers alike.
Are my formulas visible to whoever I send the file to?
In an .xlsx, yes — along with hidden rows, other worksheets and cell comments. Converting to an image or a PDF captures displayed values only, which is the main reason to send one rather than the workbook itself.
What happens to a workbook with several sheets?
Each worksheet is handled separately, and multiple outputs download together as a ZIP. If you only want one sheet shared, convert a copy of the file containing just that sheet.
Will my colours, borders and formatting survive?
Into an image or a PDF, yes — cell fills, borders, bold text, alignment and conditional formatting all render as they display. Into CSV, no: that format holds values only, by design.
Do I need an account?
No sign-up, no email, nothing to install. Because there is no account there is also no stored file history, so keep your own copies.
Is my financial data safe?
Files travel over an encrypted connection, are processed automatically without human review, and are permanently deleted from our servers within 60 minutes. For documents under strict confidentiality obligations, desktop software that never uploads anything remains the safer choice. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
