The most common reason to delete pages, and the cause is almost always the scanner setting.
An automatic feeder set to double-sided will scan the back of every sheet whether anything is printed there or not. Feed twenty single-sided pages and you get forty images, half of them empty. Many scanners have a blank-page detection option, but it is often off by default, and it misses pages that are not quite empty — a faint shadow through thin paper or a speck of dust is enough for it to keep the sheet.
Spotting them in a long document: in the page thumbnails, a blank scan is not white but a very pale grey with a slightly darker edge. Scroll the preview at a small thumbnail size and they stand out as a repeating rhythm — typically every second page. Once you notice the pattern, selecting them takes seconds rather than minutes.
Worth doing before anything else. Blank pages carry a full-size scanned image each, so a forty-page scan is twice the file size it needs to be.
Usually yes, but the relationship is not proportional, and it is worth knowing why before you are disappointed.
Deleting a page removes the content unique to it. But PDFs share resources across pages — embedded fonts, a logo repeated in every header, colour profiles are stored once and referenced throughout. Those stay as long as any remaining page still uses them.
So the results split predictably:
The pages you keep come across exactly as they were — copied, not re-encoded, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution. What shifts is everything that referred to the document as a whole.
Printed page numbers no longer match. The number printed on a page still says 47 even though it is now page 43. For a document anyone will cite or file, renumber afterwards with Add Page Numbers so the printed sequence matches reality.
A table of contents becomes wrong. Entries pointing to page 60 in a document that now ends at 55, or simply pointing to the wrong content. Worth checking on anything with an index or contents page.
Internal links and bookmarks may break. Cross-references and outline entries that pointed to a deleted page have nowhere to go. Web links are unaffected, since they point outside the document.
Digital signatures stop validating. A certificate-based signature covers the file's exact structure, which deleting a page rewrites. Readers will report it as invalid — correctly, since the document is no longer what was signed.
An important distinction if the reason you are deleting is confidentiality.
Deleting a page genuinely removes it — that content does not travel to whoever receives the new file, which makes this a clean way to withhold an appendix or a schedule of figures.
But if the sensitive information is on a page you are keeping, deleting other pages does nothing for it. And covering it with a black rectangle in a PDF editor does not remove it either; the text sits underneath and can be copied straight out. For that, Redact PDF removes the content itself.
