We make documents easy.

ButDoc is a free set of browser-based tools for converting, compressing, merging and editing documents, spreadsheets, presentations and images — without installing software, creating an account, or paying for a subscription.

No accounts, no installs

Every tool runs in your browser. There is no sign-up, no email required, and nothing to download — on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone or Android.

Files deleted within the hour

Uploads travel over an encrypted connection, are processed automatically without human review, and are permanently deleted from our servers within 60 minutes.

Free, and honest about why

ButDoc is funded by advertising rather than subscriptions. No paywalls, no per-file limits, no "upgrade to download" at the last step.

Why ButDoc exists

Most people who need to convert a document need it once, urgently, and on whatever device is in front of them. A form has to be a PDF. A deck is too large to email. A scan will not let you copy a single line of text. None of that is worth installing software for, and none of it should require a credit card at the download step.

That is the whole idea here: the common document jobs, free, in a browser tab, with no account and no catch. If you use ButDoc once and never come back, it did its job.

The other half of the idea matters just as much. Document formats disagree with each other in specific, predictable ways, and most converter sites simply do not tell you. A PDF stores character positions rather than paragraphs. A .txt file carries no record of its own encoding. A slide places content on a canvas while a document flows it down a page. Every tool page here explains what carries across for that conversion, what does not, and what to check before you rely on the result — including the cases where the honest answer is that a different tool would serve you better.

What we build

Around forty-five tools across PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and image formats: converting, merging, splitting, compressing, signing, redacting, rotating and reading text out of scans. Every one runs in the browser, on any operating system, with nothing to install.

The site is maintained by a small independent team rather than a company with a support department. That is why the guidance on each page is specific rather than generic — it comes from the problems people actually write in about. You can reach us directly at [email protected], and it is read by the people who build the tools.

How your files are handled

Document tools ask you to hand over your files, so it is fair to explain exactly what happens to them.

  • Your file is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection.
  • It is processed automatically by our conversion software. No person opens, reads or reviews it.
  • Both your original and the converted result are permanently deleted from our servers within 60 minutes.
  • We do not keep copies, we do not use your documents to train anything, and we do not share them with third parties.
  • No account means no file history, no stored library, and nothing tied to your identity.

The full detail is in our Privacy Policy, and the cookies we use — including advertising cookies — are listed in our Cookies Policy.

One honest caveat. Files are processed on a server, not entirely inside your browser. That is what allows the tools to work on any device without installing anything, but it does mean your file leaves your computer. For documents covered by strict confidentiality obligations, desktop software that never uploads anything is the safer choice, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

How ButDoc stays free

ButDoc is supported by advertising. That is the entire business model: no subscriptions, no premium tier, no file-size limits that disappear if you pay, and no watermark you have to buy your way out of.

We would rather be direct about this than let you discover it at the download button. Advertising pays for the servers, which means the tools stay free for the student converting a thesis and the freelancer merging invoices alike.

What we don't do

Being clear about limits is part of being useful:

  • We are not affiliated with any government agency — not the IRS, SSA, USCIS, or any equivalent in any country. We are also not connected to Microsoft, Adobe, or any other software vendor whose formats we support.
  • We do not sell your data. There is no data to sell: no accounts, no profiles, no stored documents.
  • Conversion is not perfect. Document formats disagree with each other in ways no converter fully resolves. Always check the output before you rely on it, and keep your original file.
  • We do not offer legal or professional advice about the documents you process, including signed or certified ones.

Getting in touch

Bug reports, format requests, a file that converted badly, or a question about how something works — all of it goes to [email protected]. If a tool produced a wrong result, describing the file (its format, roughly its size, what you expected) helps enormously in tracking it down.
